I recently had the privilege of attending the SV Angel Founders Summit, thanks to Topher Conway, Ron Conway, and the SVAngel team. The event featured an array of impressive speakers on AI, but the highlight for me was hearing Jony Ive speak. Known for his iconic tenure at Apple and now leading a creative agency called "Love From," Ive's insights into the creative process were particularly captivating.
What stands out in memory can sometimes be peculiar—like Jony Ive's pink socks. While I'm not usually one to notice fashion details (I'm the person in orange pants almost every day), those socks struck a chord with me. They seemed to enhance his legendary status.
Jony Ive discussed creativity in terms that bordered on the magical. He spoke about the blank slate of starting with nothing and then suddenly, a fully fleshed-out concept comes into existence. He emphasized trust in his process, however the part I found most impactful is that creativity is not just about generating ideas but also about clearing away obstacles like ego and negativity that hinder the flow of innovation. It was interesting that it was less about what he or his team does, and more about what cannot be there. As if creativity is inevitable, but we get in our own way.
This perspective resonated with me in reference toward venture capital. Just as in creativity, making good investment decisions often feels inevitable—if only we could strip away the barriers of logic, ego, and mistrust that cloud judgment.
Ive’s talk was a masterclass in the subtleties of the creative process, reminding me that the path to innovation is as much about removing impediments as it is about the act of creation itself.
Jony Ive is a real legend, his designs always have a purpose where others often design just for the sake of “new”. Must have been a very interesting session.
