Starting with Questions.

A musing.

Have you ever had a thought or idea, and immediately realize your brain has never thought THAT thought or idea? It’s my favorite feeling in the world.

My most original thought that I ever had sounds silly. I was twelve years old and reading a lot of comic books. And as I was reading a Batman comic book, a concept boiled to the surface of my brain, “Why aren’t there real world vigilante’s” Or more so, “Why don’t we hear about Batman’s in the real world?”

I remember starting to search around online for any examples of Batman in the real world, and there were a few, but nothing serious. But that thought provoked a lifelong mission to enable super powers in others.

All great actions start with a question. “Why aren’t there real world vigilante’s and super heroes” it provokes the brain to search for answers. Sometimes the question runs in the background of your brain while you go about your life, but those questions stay in there.

Although I used this vigilante question, I don’t only ask questions about super heroes and comic books in order to generate action and evoke curiosity. The world of venture capital has plenty of questions around, that continue to be unanswered.

I think that the first question about venture capital I ever had was, “How do I invest in a startup?”

I grew up in a family of Venture Capitalists, but until my mid-20s I had never asked myself that question. 16 years ago, the internet wasn’t the rich source of information for investing in startups that it is today, but I the idea I figured out was that I needed to find a startup that I wanted to invest in.

Fortunately that question led my down a path of nearly 600 startup investments now, and starting Boost VC, where our brand is all about supporting the mutants, the cyborgs and the futuristic.

Its sometimes fun to think about how everything starts with a curious, simple question.
