Different skillsets ... translational research (the gap between academia & commercialisation) is a specialty all of its own (trying to derisk the TRL5->7). Anything which is rooted in physically (eg energy) often needs serious infrastructure. I can see it working for some key algorithms or patentable & licenseable IP but to address the translational gap is going to need more than $50k Raman noodle funding.
PS nothing wrong with being PhD and entrepreneurial but it is a rare skillset being able to spot market gaps and exploit them.
