It’s interesting. Boost VC has been doing Demo Day’s for 11 years. Which is wild! In that time, no one ever asked us “Why are you doing Demo Day’s for your companies?” because it was obvious, we wanted to highlight our portfolio to investors in the ecosystem.
Two years ago, we decided to open up our Demo Day to other Deep Tech VC partners. We no longer call it Boost VC Demo Day, it’s Deep Tech Demo Day, but Boost VC still fundamentally runs and curates it. For some reason VCs and startups started to ask us, “Why do you do this?” and I believe it’s a fair question, and so I wanted to write an answer to it. On the surface it would look like we don’t get anything for helping. (RSVP to Deep Tech Demo day Here)
There’s a very simple answer: We are long term greedy and we like to be useful.
Our mission at Boost VC is to accelerate the Sci-Fi future. In order to accelerate the pace of innovation, it would be idiotic to think we can do that alone. Historically bonding together with other people on a similar mission in Deep Tech makes the whole industry stronger.
Deep Tech people are “Our People” we make friends by meeting more. We like talking about geeky things, and we like helping people who like geeky things.
We had already built a platform that would allow for us to work with others in a smooth way, and if we believe that even one additional match between a startup and an investor were to happen, it is worth it for us to work with as many Deep Tech funds and startups as we can!
We get to live, rent free, in the Deep Tech solar system… well… actually not rent free, it’s a very heavy lift, but we get to help guide what “Deep Tech” means to the market. We like doing the leg work to help the industry.
Pre-Seed and Seed stage should stay a friendly place. Partnering with other funds is lovely. I believe that the early stages of Venture Capital is not a scarcity based market. The more funds, the more companies, the better the outcome for humanity and capitalism.
We get to funnel great deals to a broader audience of Angels and VCs. Us being one of those VCs.
I like to be useful. I believe that’s all any human wants in life. And whenever we have the capacity to be useful, even if it looks a little crazy to other people, we want to do that thing. And it always rally’s back to our mission —- To Accelerate the Sci-Fi Future!
