The way I used to download music, my kids will get EVERYTHING!
I donβt remember what the first song I downloaded from Napster was, but I do remember coming home from school after learning about a new song, searching for the song and watching the download bar on the screen for 30 minutes at a time. It was a lot of N*Sync, Christina Aguilera and Eminem.
In middle school I learned that I was able to download music from the internet to my computer. People who had music on their computers, could hook up to the network and share their music! WHHHHHAAAAATTT?!
This blew my mind, but it also destroyed the old business of music distribution. A network of individuals broke the distribution monopoly of music. This transition of industry is being repeated across EVERYTHING today.
Imagine that seismic transition for the music industry to recognize that! The monopoly on physical CD distribution and retail was screwed. No one needed to go to the store to buy music anymore. When was the last time you actually went to a music store to buy music - you donβt!!
In the way that music distribution was disrupted 20 years ago, today:
Music creation has been disrupted
Writing distribution with the rise of individuals blogging
Video creation with the adoption of high quality cameras on iPhones
You used to rely on big institutions for quality content, now 90% of the content you consume is from a network of participants.
The last 30 years of technology has evolved the user behaviors towards media by allowing a large number of smaller participants (individuals) to compete with the small number of larger participants (the monopoly) in the creation and distribution of digital things.
Anything that can be digitized has gone through this transition - music, news, TV, communities. The most recent transition of this was money!
When humans began treating money as a digital product with credit cards and online bank accounts, the world changed, and allowed for the transition to Bitcoin. An innovation in creation and distribution of money/value!
At Boost VC, we believe that the ubiquity of the internet, along with the rise in Artificial intelligence and Blockchain technology will allow the the digital transformations to overflow into the non-digital world. We have already started to see the edges of this take place with our investments in aerospace, oceans and robotics.
The way that I understood the disruption of digital music, my children will understand the disruption of manufacturing, academia, science, and construction.
My 10 year old has a 3D printer, with it she will think of a toy, and print that toy. It takes 10-20 minutes and she gets to play with a physical object, or give them as gifts. Traditional Toy distributors should be freaking out right now. There will be no need to go to a toy store in the future.
This distribution/creation paradigm will happen in every industry. Physical consumer industries thought they were protected from the digital powers of the youths⦠BUT NO MORE!!!
Children used to have lemonade stands, now they will set up full toy stores, the toys will be manufactured across a network of houses in the city and brought to one location by robots, and then sold to passers by.
At Boost VC we hope to accelerate this transition of disruption. We hope to invest in founders who are taking on the difficult challenge of changing an older, traditionally physical industry with a monopoly and making it into a network of smaller players.

Guess we better start learning how to 3D print our own walkers, because the future's already leaving us in the dust!:P
